A Suggested Procedure for Cleaning Tattoo Equipment
Local or state regulations always take the lead in governing the operation of tattoo parlors. Here’s how you can incorporate a benchtop ultrasonic cleaner in the cleaning and sterilizing cycle. inspect. Rinse in water and package for sterilization in the autoclave.
The first step is to wash the equipment to remove deposits. If you want to hold ultrasonic cleaning and sterilizing until the end of the day we recommend keeping instruments immersed in either a germicidal or enzymatic presoak. Do not let them dry out before cleaning.
We use as an example the EH050CR ultrasonic cleaner that comes with a stainless steel basket and lid, and holds 0.5 gallons of cleaning solution. Larger capacity units are also available.
Prepare the ultrasonic cleaner by filling it with deionized water and adding 1-3 oz per gallon MedClean C7 enzymatic alkaline liquid concentrate. Non-caustic and phosphate free it is formulated to clean surgical instruments. inspect. Rinse in water and package for sterilization in the autoclave.
Turn on the ultrasonic cleaner and allow it to operate without a load for 10-15 minutes in order to mix the solution and remove trapped air. This is called degassing and must be done each time you prepare a fresh solution. inspect. Rinse in water and package for sterilization in the autoclave.
When you’re ready to clean, turn on the cleaner and set the thermostat for 50?C (122?F). While the solution warms carefully position tattoo equipment in the basket so they do not touch each other. inspect. Rinse in water and package for sterilization in the autoclave.
Lower the basket in the solution and set the timer for 10 minutes. Cavitation action provided by the unit’s ultrasonic transducers and aided by the sweep function quickly removes contaminants from all surfaces including those that cannot be reached by manual scrubbing. Rinse in water and package for sterilization in the autoclave.
At the end of the cycle remove the equipment and inspect. Rinse in water and package for sterilization in the autoclave.
We recommend frequent replacement of the cleaning solution, or at intervals recommended by your local health department. Take the time to clean the tank according to the operation manual, then prepare and degas a new batch.
